Blackout Blinds for Schools: Getting Halls, Labs and Studios Right

"Blackout" is one of the most misused words in window shading. A blackout fabric stops light passing through the cloth — but the light that ruins a physics demonstration or a drama performance does not come through the cloth. It comes around the edges. Getting genuine darkness in a school hall or lab is a design problem, and it is worth understanding before anything is ordered.

Fabric blocks light; systems block gaps

A standard roller blind in blackout fabric still leaves a bright halo: a gap either side of the fabric, a strip of light at the sill, and glow over the top of the roll. In a room that needs real darkness, the blind has to be designed to close those routes:

  • Side channels that the fabric runs inside, sealing the vertical edges.
  • A cassette or fascia over the roll, closing the gap at the head.
  • Oversizing the blind well beyond the glass line where channels are not practical.

How far you go depends on the room. An exam hall needs glare control and decent dim-out; a science lab doing optics work, a photography darkroom or a dormitory for boarders needs the full channelled system.

Big windows need proper hardware

School halls tend to have the largest windows in the building, and large blackout blinds are heavy. Standard domestic-grade hardware fails quickly under daily use at that scale — we specify heavy-duty rollers, and for wide or high windows, crank gearing or motorisation. Where a hall has a full wall of glazing on both sides, motorised operation earns its keep fast: one switch darkens the room in seconds, with no poles, no ladders and no caretaker call-out.

The school-specific details

Three things we always raise with schools:

  1. Child safety first. Every blind must comply with BS EN 13120 — no accessible looped cords or chains. Wands, cranks or motors are the clean answer in classrooms.
  2. Robustness beats elegance. Blinds in schools get pulled, leant on and used as goalposts. Metal componentry and heavy-duty fabrics cost slightly more and last years longer.
  3. Term dates rule. We plan school installations for holidays and half-terms as a matter of course, and where work has to happen in term time we agree the school's safeguarding arrangements before anyone arrives on site.

We have fitted blackout systems in schools and colleges for decades — from full blackout in a private college's science labs to heavy-duty curtains across a school hall.
